CPD Session 2012-2013

The following CPD Sessions were held in IDCORE Semester 1, 2013-2014:

  • Gaps and Compromises: Learning from Recent Projects and Schemes

Gaps and Compromises: Learning from Recent Projects and Schemes

  • 22nd July - 2nd August 2013
  • Location: Oxfordshire
  • Course leader: Prof William Allsop, HR Wallingford
  • Price: £3500

The course highlights scheme selection and outline design, permitting, and operations, using real scheme examples to draw out generic lessons wherever possible.

The course is delivered in six main parts:

  1. Outline of offshore/nearshore renewable schemes and site selection
  2. Metocean and modelling
  3. Maritime engineering
  4. Wave forces
  5. Environmental assessments
  6. Scour prediction and protection

Learning Outcomes

  • understanding of waves/tides, coastal morphology, and structural design, with general lessons from maritime engineering
  • exploration of wider effects of offshore/nearshore renewable schemes on the coastal/nearshore environment, identifying modelling required of those effects, and their contributions to EIAs
  • familiarity with setting-up and using world-leading open source modelling codes (TELEMAC and SWAN) to model flow/wave transformations in offshore/nearshore areas
  • demonstration of practical aspects of scheme design, boundary conditions, and practical/economic constraints
  • exploration of operational constraints and use of planning/forecasting tools

Attendees will also gain hands on experience in the Froude Modelling hall and the Navigation Simulator.
